SO THAT BENUE FARMERS CAN HAVE VALUE FOR THEIR SWEAT

Tomorrow at the Makurdi International Market, Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom will officially launch the State Unified Standard Weights and Measures.

The State Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment headed by the Commissioner, Dr Tersoo Kpelai is the one anchoring the new policy.

The implication of this development is that from tomorrow going forward, anyone who wants to buy farm produce in Benue State must do so using the approved sizes of sacks and other containers according to the approved Weights and Measures.

FACTS TO NOTE
1. The approved width of the sack for crops such as rice, groundnuts is 28 inches and its length is 47 inches - Net WT 28/47. The approved size of a bag for crops such as soybeans is Net WT 23/27. A container of products in category of parboiled rice must not be above 25kg.

2. The decision to introduce Unified Standard Weights and Measures by Governor Ortom is the first of its kind during the current democratic practice in the state.

3. Governor Ortom has, by this move brought to an end the perennial suffering Benue farmers endure in the hands of buyers/merchants who use large sacks to buy farm produce at low prices.

4. The introduction of the Unified Standard Weights and Measures is part of the deliberate policy of the Samuel Ortom administration to boost agriculture and ensure that Benue farmers get value for their sweat.

5. Test-run of the policy has been widely accepted across the state as farmers have continued to commend Governor Ortom for the initiative, urging the State Government to fully implement and sustain the policy.

6. For the first time in many years, a policy of government in the state has been embraced by the people irrespective of political affiliation. Things can only get better in Benue State.
