Parts of Benue state, particularly Tiv speaking areas of Buruku, Hon. Orker Jev's local govt, Guma, Gov. Samuel Ortom's local govt, Tarka, Senator George Akume's local govt and others from where some leaders hail from, have again come under attack by killer herdsmen. It was a night of sorrow following reports on the fresh attacks with gory pictures of mutilated bodies. It appears little or nothing concrete is being done to stop the senseless killings of the farmers.
I
will not be wrong to accuse the political class for not doing the needful in
arresting this heinous act. Often times, we have been assured of peace after
series of pretentious peace talks between Benue state govt and neighbouring
states like Nasarawa and Taraba where the dastardly acts are reported to
originate from.
With
all sense of humility and responsibility, I want to observe that, the Ortom led
administration has not demonstrated sincere commitment to ending these
killings. My reason is not far fetched. What has happened to the Open Grazing
(Prohibition) Bill before the state Assembly? If I am correct, Benue state
started work on such a bill before Ekiti state.
Today,
it is a law in that state. Since then, no herdsmen attack has been reported in
that state. Is the administration more interested in political victories and
relevance than saving a nation? Why were other places attacked, heard of more
than the areas mentioned above even as the attacks have been recurring?
Invasion does not stop at the poor man's territory. It captures targeted areas
including big man's area. Just a matter of time, if not checked. My heart
bleeds.
