BNSG TO PARTNER NAT LIBRARY TO BOOST READING CULTURE

Benue State Government has reinstated its desire to partner with
National Library of Nigeria to promote reading culture in the state.

Governor Ortom made the disclosure when he paid host to the National
Librarian and Chief Executive Officer, National Library of Nigeria
with his entourage today at the Benue People's House Makurdi.

The governor represented by his deputy Engr Benson Abounu who
expressed displeasure at the decline in reading culture amongst
youths, their inability to express themselves either in speaking and
writing calls for drastic measures.

He said as it is done in other parts of the world, reading has
transverse from analogue to E- Library and the earlier the state buys
into the idea the better it becomes.

He further promised to help in the sensitization programs of the
agency, ensure that the state complies with all the agencies laid down
laws especially complying with the international serial number usage
as well as book number usage.

Narrating the purpose for the visit which dwells more on carrying out
readership promotion campaign activities, the National Librarian and
CEO of National Library of Nigeria, Prof Lanre Aina applauded the
government for its earlier foresight at educational development, its
support to library sciences in various level of educational
institutions and public libraries and to an extent complying to the
laws of mandatory depositing of publication in the agency by
publishers, institution and authors.

However he said compliance level is very low.

He therefore appealed to the governor for assistance in ensuring
complete and regular compliance to the deposit laws.

In line with global best practice he said adherence to publishing
standards by government printing press of Benue state as well as
publications making use of International Standard Book Number (ISBN)
or International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) are issues to be taken
seriously.

Prof Aina further called on Benue populace to patronize the services
of the National Library.
