OH IGEDE MY IGEDE I WEEP FOR MY PEOPLE - OGI JOHN

OGI JOHN

Recall on the day of the coronation of the Tor Tiv, having followed the process of selection and the candidate Prof Ayatse who emerged as the peoples choice, every Tiv son and daughter was happy. I wrote a piece and wished my Igede people take a leap from that.

I wept yesterday as I followed the process of the selection of the First Class Chief in Igede, as educated and enlightened people, Igede people still allowed themselves to be enslave in this 21st century , if the largest tribe in Benue in terms of population can select her king peacefull, what is the population of the clan heads that they cannot arrive at a peaceful selection. Worst of all, how can thugs be used to distract such a process, what is the interest and why is government interfering with the process of this selection when it is not a political thing.

Igede people are wiser and more civilised to be cheaply entangled with a wrong Chief, if he is wrongly selected, we shall continue to remind him of his process of enthronement each time we pass through his palace.

Well meaning Igede sons, we the younger generation consider your display as a shame and misrepresentation of the culture of an Igede man who is known for peace and equity. What legacy are you leaving for you children and the generation unborn. This is a reflection as a seat under the palm trees in my house writing this piece I have taken a view of the future and x rayed the past and have come to realise that the future is very slim hence the very premise for every developed society is a prescription called rational thinking. Why cant the people choose who their leader should be? Where is the respect for truth, where is integrity of Oligede, where is transparency, the gods are definitely angry.

Finally, as a travel this morning to witness the reactions of the people , the Oju- Awaji road reminds me of mans share inhumanity to man. You all travelled on that road to distract and appoint a political chief. I am so ashamed of myself and my people.

  1. Benedict P Onoja This is why Nigeria's problem is fundamental. Igede Man was the first Och'Idoma and they say that they are no longer part of Idoma Kingdom. We all supported their cries for self-rule traditionally but the process has shown that the problem of Igede is not because they were under Idoma Kingdom but lack of unity to achieve common goal. Same thing will happen to Biafrans if they gave them Biafra State.

I think the solution to Nigeria's problem is to ensure respect for one another and see each other as a people.
