THE IRRESPONSIBILITY OF SOME ACCLAIMED CHURCHES OF GOD AND THE NEGATIVE IMPACT IT HAS ON ITS TEEMING MEMBERSHIP. ANALYZING THE CONCEPT OF WORK-LESS FAITH - Ukan Kurugh

Churches are, according to my convictions serve as comfort homes to
their members. To relief them of the pains of life and to sooth their
feelings about the challenges that confront humanity. Churches too are
supposed to show a reasonable level of corporate social responsibility
to its members particularly and then to the public if the resources
would permit. However, the practices of some churches today,
particularly within the Makurdi metropolis has greatly negated this
practice.

Now here is a true story of practical experience. A man who is a
committed member of a particular church and a lead choirister, whose
only child suffered a life-threatening sickness confronted the
church's hierarchy on assistance to save the life of his son and only
child. The church which no doubt enjoys one of the largest
congregations in Tiv land told him that, the elders would have to sit
on his issue before decisions could be made on the nature of
assistance to be given to him. It took a long time and the boy's
condition deteriorated almost to the point of death, yet the church
elders had not sit on the issue. Thanks to God I took up the issue and
people responded positively.

Now, a critical look at this condition has left me wondering on the
nature of christianity most of the churches now practice. What has
become of the works of mercy and almsgiving Christ himself preached
about? Now don't be surprised that, when the child gets well, the same
church will trigger a thanksgiving to God for his mercies on the
family, when they in themselves failed to do the needful.

Leaders, especially of churches ought to lead by example of the
Christianity they preach. This they must do as a source of
encouragement and motivation to the people they lead. Sorrowfully,
most churches in our midst have rather relied on taking from their
members without commensurate care on such members. Even when a member
suffers risk of death even in their presence, they give a blind eye to
it and eventually when such a person finally dies, they bury him in
the acclaimed Christian way and heap praises on his reputation when he
was alive.

The churches in this ungodly conduct must desist from such practices
and should be a source of physical healing to their members and not
only meeting their spiritual welfare. A church that would not seek the
physical welfare of its members is failing in a great deal and
diverting from the true essence of Christian life. The bible even
insists that, faith without work is dead, we must therefore embrace
this advise to improve the standard of the acclaimed Christian lives
we live.
